DIY custom phone case machine: what the WM880 is

The WM880 is a vending machine that prints phone cases. A customer walks up, picks their own photo or design, and gets a case made for their exact phone model on the spot. No shop counter, no designer, no second trip to collect the order. The blank cases are already inside the cabinet, the print head is inside the cabinet, and the payment terminal is on the front.

DIY Custom Phone Case Machine WM880

Physically it is a 1340 × 990 × 2170 mm steel cabinet weighing 380 kg, running on 110V to 220V at 410W. Inside, it stores 1,020 or 1,025 blank TPU+PC cases depending on which print head version you order, and the ink system holds 2000 ml. Coin, cash, bank card, NFC and QR payment all work as standard.

Most buyers of this machine fall into four groups: an operator putting a single unit into a mall or a transit location, a chain rolling out several at once, an event or exhibition stand that needs to sell something people actually keep, and a distributor buying for resale in their own market. The machine is the same for all of them. What changes is the quantity, the print head version, and whether you add the optional inventory identification module. If you are still comparing brands before committing, this comparison of the top phone case vending machines covers how the WM880 sits against the alternatives.

What a customer does at the machine

The whole transaction happens on the touch screen and the customer’s own phone. Four steps:

What a customer does at the machine

  1. Scan the QR code shown on the machine screen.
  2. Choose the phone model, for example iPhone 16, iPhone 15 or iPhone 11.
  3. Upload a photo from the phone.
  4. Pay with coin, cash, card, NFC or QR payment, and the case is printed.

Print visual recognition positions the artwork on the case with AI assistance, so the design lands where it should and the print comes out without white borders. That matters more than it sounds. On cheaper machines, a photo that is off center by a few millimeters turns into a refund request, and you are not there to handle it.

Refilling is your side of the job, and it takes minutes. Cases load flat with the back facing up, the stack has to stay under the red line indicator, and then you push the case into the machine. The loading structure was built so that restocking a full column of cases is quick rather than fiddly, which is the difference between one refill visit per week and three.

Print head versions: F1080, i1600-U1 and i3200-U1HD

Print head versions: F1080, i1600-U1 and i3200-U1HD

Three heads are available, and the honest difference between them is speed and head life rather than whether the result looks good. All three print properly. The F1080 is the entry option with good photo resolution and clear detail. The i1600-U1 prints roughly three times faster, lasts around four times longer, and produces about twice the clarity. The i3200-U1HD sits above it with a further increase in printing speed.

Version Print head What it gives you
F1080 version (base) Epson F1080-A1 Good photo resolution, clear detail, strong color
i1600 version (standard) Epson i1600-U1 Printing speed ×3, lifespan ×4 and clarity ×2 compared with F1080
i3200 version (upgrade) Epson i3200-U1HD Lossless upgrade from i1600-U1 with further increased printing speed

Upgrades work in one direction only, from F1080 to i1600-U1 and from i1600-U1 to i3200-U1HD, and both are lossless. You are not throwing away the machine to move up a tier.

Which one to order comes down to how busy the site is. A single machine in a quiet location can run on the F1080 and keep the capital cost down. If the location moves volume and a queue at the screen means lost sales, the i1600-U1 earns back its extra cost through throughput and a head that lasts four times as long. For busy sites and multi-unit rollouts, the i3200-U1HD is the one to price.

Price, versions and add-ons

Prices below are per unit for orders of one to three machines.

Version Print head Case storage Price (1 to 3 units)
WM880 F1080 version Epson F1080 1020 pcs US$4,999.00
WM880 i1600-U1 version Epson i1600-U1 1025 pcs US$5,999.00

Two options sit on top of the machine price.

Inventory identification adds US$200 (¥1,350) and comes as a camera module mounted on top of the machine. Once installed, the machine recognizes what is in each slot and reports stock levels automatically, which removes the daily manual count. On one machine this is a convenience. On five or ten machines, it is the difference between sending a driver out on a hunch and sending one out when a column is actually low.

Moving from the i1600-U1 to the i3200-U1HD print head adds US$680 (¥5,000) and is a lossless upgrade, so you can buy the standard machine now and move up later without replacing it.

Orders of four to six, seven to ten and eleven or more units are quoted at tier pricing that comes down as the quantity rises. Send us the number of units you have in mind and we will send the schedule. For a sense of what operators in other markets are paying and what they get at each price point, read what you actually pay for a phone case vending machine and what you get.

Cases and ink: what you keep buying after installation

The machine is the one-off cost. Cases and ink are the recurring one, and they decide your margin, so it is worth looking at both before you sign anything.

Phone cases (TPU + PC) Standard case Magnetic case
1,000 pcs US$1.30 / pc US$2.30 / pc
5,000 pcs US$1.20 / pc US$2.20 / pc
8,000 pcs US$1.10 / pc US$2.10 / pc
Ink Type Price
Standard Epson UV hard ink, 4 colors US$100.00 / set
F1080 version Epson UV hard ink, 6 colors US$160.00 / set

Case cost drops as volume rises, so the practical question is how many cases to stock against how much shelf space you have. The WM880 holds over a thousand, which is enough to cover the popular phone models without running out mid-week.

The WM880 holds over a thousand

The cases themselves are TPU plus PC composite with two optional lens cover protection designs, and the structure was shaped so the case goes on the phone easily. Easy fitting is not a small thing in a vending setting. A case that fights the customer gets forced on, cracked at the corner, and becomes an after-sales problem you have to absorb.

Ink consumption per case depends on how much of the artwork is covered, so a full-bleed photo and a small logo are not the same cost. We quote ink consumption against your actual artwork rather than giving an average that will not hold. If you are building a budget for a bank or an investor, this cost breakdown of what an operator actually spent in 2026 goes past the sticker price.

Management system and remote monitoring

The machine reports to software on a PC or a phone, and that is where you actually run the business from.

Module What it does
Inventory identification (optional) Real-time stock monitoring per slot once the camera module is fitted
Revenue statement Daily, weekly and monthly sales analytics with charts
Order status Full order history and status tracking
Promotion activity settings Discount rules, time periods and quantity limits
Machine status details Live monitoring of printer operation, alarms and connectivity
Basic settings Machine configuration and preferences
Currency setting Multi-currency support for different markets
Language settings Interface available in English, Russian, French, Arabic, Korean and other languages

The mobile app handles remote monitoring of equipment status, sales data and print records, so a problem with the printer shows up on your phone before a customer tells you about it. If you are running machines in more than one city, or in a market where the local language is not English, the currency and language settings mean you do not need a modified machine for each country.

Certifications and manufacturing credentials

The WM880 holds the certifications needed to clear customs and pass site inspections in the markets we ship to most.

Certification Scope
CCC China Compulsory Certification
CE EU compliance
ISO International Organization for Standardization
RoHS Restriction of hazardous substances
PSE Electrical appliance and material safety, Japan

Alongside the certification, Wider Matrix holds 5 or more independent R&D patents, KC, CE and PSE related independent R&D patents, and more than 30 industry awards. If your procurement process needs certificates in a specific format, or documents legalized for your country, ask before you order rather than after. Original certificates, test reports and declarations are what a customs broker or a mall’s facilities department will ask for, and we would rather you have them in hand first.

Where this machine earns its money

The WM880 works wherever groups of people wait and carry phones. Shopping malls and retail centers, exhibition halls and trade fairs, airports and stations, universities and school campuses, cinemas, tourist attractions, office lobbies, and phone accessory shops that want to add on-demand customization without adding a staff member.

Where this machine earns its money

Exhibitions and events are a special case worth calling out, because the machine does two jobs there. It sells cases to visitors, and it gives your stand a reason for people to stop and stand in it while their case prints. Booths that only hand out brochures get ignored. Mall operators have their own checklist before they approve an installation, covering power, floor loading, footfall position and the revenue share. What operators should check before installing in a mall walks through that list, and it is worth reading before you sign a lease rather than after.

Two things decide whether a location pays: how many people pass the machine, and how many of them carry a phone model you stock cases for. If you are weighing up a specific site and want an opinion on whether it will earn, send us the city and the type of location and we will tell you what we have seen at comparable sites.

Why operators order from Wider Matrix

The machine, the cases and the ink come from the same place. That matters more than it sounds in this business, because a machine that prints badly is usually a consumable problem, and when the case supplier and the machine supplier are different companies, both of them point at the other one.

  • Lossless print head upgrades mean the machine you buy today can be moved up to a faster head later instead of being replaced.
  • Support runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by people rather than a ticket queue.
  • Certification covers CE for the EU and PSE for Japan, and multi-currency and multi-language settings are built in for markets outside the US.
  • Custom requirements are handled per order, whether that is quantity, configuration or a specific market’s documentation.

Ordering the right machine matters as much as the machine itself, because the wrong head or the wrong quantity is what eats the margin. If you want the full picture before you talk to us, the WM880 phone case printer review and buyer’s guide goes through the machine in more detail.

Send us your requirement

Tell us the version you want (F1080, i1600-U1 or i3200-U1HD), how many units, whether you want the inventory identification module, and the city the machine is going to. That is all we need to come back with a quotation that includes the machine, the tier price for your quantity and a delivery schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the WM880 cost?

The F1080 version is US$4,999 and the i1600-U1 version is US$5,999, both per unit at one to three units. Orders of four to six, seven to ten and eleven or more machines are quoted separately at tier pricing, so the unit price falls as the order grows. Get in touch with your quantity and we will send the schedule.

Which version should I buy?

Match the head to the traffic. One machine in a quiet location can start on the F1080. A busy site wants the i1600-U1 for the speed and the four times longer head life. If you are ordering several units for high-footfall sites, price the i3200-U1HD, which is a lossless upgrade from the i1600-U1 for US$680 (¥5,000) extra.

What does it cost to print one case?

Blank TPU+PC cases run from US$1.30 each at 1,000 pieces down to US$1.10 at 8,000 pieces, and magnetic cases from US$2.30 down to US$2.10. Ink is sold by the set: US$100 for the 4-color Epson UV hard ink set and US$160 for the 6-color set used with the F1080 version, with 2000 ml of capacity inside the machine. Ink used per case depends on how much coverage the artwork has, so we work it out against your design rather than quoting a flat figure. If you are modelling the whole business, what an operator actually spent in the first year is the more honest starting point than the machine price alone.

Can it run without staff?

Yes. The customer handles everything from the screen and their phone, and the machine takes payment on its own. You monitor stock, sales and printer status remotely from a PC or the mobile app, which means a normal week is one restocking visit rather than someone on site. If you add the inventory identification module, the software tells you which slot is low instead of you counting columns.

Which phone models are supported?

Apple models including iPhone 16, iPhone 15 and iPhone 11, plus Samsung, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Huawei and OPPO. If the model you need is not covered, tell us which one it is and we will confirm what is available. Two optional lens cover protection designs are available for the cases.

What payment methods does the machine accept?

Coin, cash, credit card, NFC and QR payment are all supported as standard. Currency and interface language are configurable, which is what you need if the machine is going into a market that uses QR payment rather than cards.

Can I upgrade the print head after buying?

Yes. F1080 to i1600-U1 and i1600-U1 to i3200-U1HD are both lossless upgrades, and the i3200 step costs US$680 (¥5,000). You are not locked into the head you start with.

Can the machine be customized or branded for our business?

Custom requirements are quoted per order. Send us what you need in writing, including the configuration, the quantity and any market-specific documentation or language requirements, and we will confirm exactly what can be done and what it costs. Nothing is assumed on your behalf.

What happens if something breaks?

Support runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For parts, warranty terms, response times and what is covered in your region, ask us for the details in writing before you pay so you have them on file. Case and ink supply continues through the same channel, so a consumable issue does not turn into a sourcing problem.

What is the lead time and how does shipping work?

Lead time depends on the version, the quantity and the destination, so we quote it per order rather than publishing a number that will not hold. Send us the address, the number of units and the version you want, and you will get a delivery schedule and a shipping quote together.

ok so honestly didn't expect much from this machine but WOW its been awesome. put it in my barbershop in Denver and people literally line up to make phone cases while waiting for their haircut lol. the software is super easy to use, my 16 year old son helps restock it on weekends. took maybe 30 min to set up out of the box, instructions were clear enough. already made back like 40% of what i paid in 2 months?? kinda crazy. only thing is the film rolls run out faster than i thought so order extras right away. but yeah 10/10 would buy again

I am from Philippines and buy this machine for my small mall business in Cebu City. Was worried about shipping but WiderMatrix team very helpful, they communicate fast on WhatsApp and arrange everything. Machine arrive in good condition, packaging very secure. Installation was not difficult, my husband and me finish in one afternoon. Customer at mall really love it!! especially young people, they take photos of their custom case and share to social media. Now 3 months running and no major problem. Machine quality feel solid and heavy, not cheap at all. Thank you WiderMatrix!

gotta say the machine itself is legit and makes really nice quality prints. I've had it in my arcade in Austin since September and sales are decent, maybe $200-300/week profit after supplies. knocked off one star because the initial shipping took way longer than promised (like 3 weeks late) and nobody from support would email me back for a while. once it arrived though everything was fine. the case designs come out super clean, customers are impressed. just wish they were more responsive on the logistics side

so I was skeptical right, thought these vending machines were kind of a scam. but my buddy has one in his restaurant in Atlanta and showed me the numbers so I pulled the trigger. honestly best business decision I made this year. I put mine in a college dorm building near UCF and these kids are OBSESSED. the touchscreen is super intuitive and the print quality is actually really good?? like way better than I expected. restocking is easy, maybe 15 min once a week. if ur on the fence just do it

Bought two of these for our family business, one in our convenience store and one at a gas station we own. Honestly wasn't sure about spending that much money but my wife convinced me lol. Both machines have been running 6 months now with zero issues, just regular cleaning and restocking. The color printing is really vibrant and cases fit perfectly on the phones. Our customers love that they can pick any photo from their phone and get a case in like 3 minutes. Support team answered all my questions before purchase and even helped me find the best spot to place the machines. Already planning to buy a third one for a new location we're opening in spring. Highly recommend if you have decent foot traffic locations
